The USS Defiant arrive at the partly constructed Starbase Arcardia in the distant Carinae Traverse. As the ship and her crew become familiar with the region, they begin to learn about the issues they will face in the coming weeks. Defiant also deals with some local pirates which have been harassing shipping lanes.

When the Ion Storm approached Eta Halix II, it was treated as routine business. The Carina Nebula routinely sent waves of charged material through the space around it. This was in fact the fourth such storm since the Federation's far flung outpost deemed Sentinel 13 was constructed on the surface. However, concern among Starfleet leadership grew when the storm seemingly stopped in space. Days dragged on to weeks and the Ion Storm did not dissipate or move on, but instead continued to obscure the system. Starfleet managed to establish a connection with the colony only a single time following the storm, managing to briefly activate the outpost's security feeds. Instead of their newly constructed outpost, the feeds showed a very different Sentinel 13, one overgrown and in heavy disrepair as if it had sat abandoned for years.

The USS Defiant has been ordered to investigate with utmost caution. But what the crew finds on Eta Halix II could spell danger for far more than the distant outpost.
