Personal History | Born on his family's cargo freighter, SS Wanderer, on 16 Dec, 2241, William is the oldest of three children to Horatio and Margaret Henderson. His childhood was a happy one, as his parents and Paternal grandparents were always there to teach him and give him love. He never knew his maternal grandparents, as they died in a shuttle crash before he was born. Growing up on an independent freighter, William and his siblings would grow to be known as Boomers, a nickname that was given to all freighter families, dating back to the beginning of interstellar spaceflight. While some took umbrage with the moniker, others, like the Hendersons, took it as a badge of honor. They did the hard, usually thankless work of ensuring humanity had what it needed to continue its journey out into the galaxy. As he grew, William was taught everything he needed to know about his home and how to keep her operational. Almost before he could walk, he was helping to maintain his home. Throughout his early childhood, real lessons were interspersed with play, helping him learn more and faster. His parents soon discovered that he had a strong craving to learn as much as he could. The more mobile he became, the more curious he grew. Growing into his teenage years, he started to grow a bit restless. He had learned just about all he could on his family's ship, yet he wanted more. While they felt a bit apprehensive about it, during a stopover at Starbase K-4, his father took William over to speak to the local recruiter about joining Starfleet. After taking a few placement exams, the recruiter was pleased to accept William into the next class to attend Starfleet Academy, back on Earth. Unfortunately, as his family's ship was not going that direction, if William decided to go, he and his family would have to part ways here on the station. Understandably, everyone concerned was feeling apprehensive. In an attempt to ease their pain, the recruiter told William and his father that they had some time to think about it, as the next starship heading back to Earth wasn't due to arrive for at least two weeks. He suggested that William return to his family and discuss things. If, when the time came, he still wanted to join Starfleet, there would be a seat for him on the starship. So, father and son returned to their home and, as a family, a discussion was held. There were tears, arguments, more tears, then laughter. Finally, though it meant that it would be a very long time before they were all in the same place again, William's family gave him their love and support to go. The morning that he left his family was a sad, yet exciting one. After giving and receiving hugs to and from his family, William said goodbye. As he started to walk away, his Grampy caught up to him and gave him a small package, then told him not to open it until after he was settled in for his trip to Earth. After hugging his Grampy one last time, William turned and entered the starship, before he changed his mind. As the starship started to leave the starbase, William watched as his family's ship, his home up until that point, flew escort for the larger and more powerful craft. Then, as the two turned in opposite directions, the starship jumped to warp. He was truly on his way, alone for the first time in his life. Finally, he opened the package that his grandfather had given him. Inside, he saw a side of Grampy that he had never known about. There were a few old military awards, and a patch that had the image of a shark on it. There was a letter among the items inside the box. Opening the letter, he was astonished to learn that not only had his Grampy been in Starfleet, he had been a Mako, the original offensive force that was modeled upon the old world Marine Corps! All his life, he had only known his grandfather to be kind and gentle. To learn that he was a decorated and highly skilled and trained warrior was an eye opening experience. As the letter continued, his grandfather told him that he knew exactly how William was feeling right now, leaving his family and all he knew, to go off and start a new adventure among different stars. His grandfather assured him that, while the heartache was strong right now, it would lessen as time went on. He should allow the adventure to be just that, an adventure. Take every opportunity to experience new things, learn all he could. If he did that, William would find that, one day, he had lived a full and rewarding life, which was all his family would ever want for him. Closing his eyes and clutching the letter to his chest, William cried a few more tears, though this time, they were less sad. He would keep these gifts with him always, carrying the words of wisdom in his heart wherever he went. He would ensure that his family was proud of him. After finally reaching Earth, William marveled at its sheer and indescribable beauty. It was the first time he had ever seen the birthplace of humanity and he felt humbled by its majesty. As he took the shuttle down to the planet's surface, his eyes took in everything, burning every detail into his brain. When the shuttle landed at the Academy shuttle port, William gazed in amazement at all the new alien faces he saw. He was quickly corralled in with the other arriving recruits and they received their incoming briefing. They were told that, just because they made it this far, that was no guarantee that they would graduate and become officers. They could be cut and sent home at any time. To stay, they would have to work harder than they had ever worked before in their lives. Starfleet only took the very best of the Federation. If someone was unable to measure up to the high standards that had been established, then they would have no place in Starfleet. William took the challenge soberly. He knew how to work hard, and felt he could take anything that was thrown at him. Over the next four years, he would find exactly what could be thrown. However, with each challenge that he faced, he found ways to overcome them. Sometimes, he did so alone, other times he did so in a group. He was quickly gaining new friends among his fellow cadets. Most of these friendships would last the rest of his life. Among the strongest bonds were the ones he formed with his fellow Red Squad cadets. There were a few different cadet squads at the Academy, with Red Squad being the elite. Throughout the years, past and future, some of Starfleet's best and brightest officers would be members of Red Squad. He was offered membership in his sophomore year, a rarity to be sure. However, what allowed him to gain the opportunity, was the fact that his test scores continued to be in the top three percent of his class, along with the fact that he was well liked among his peers. When he joined Red Squad, even more doors were suddenly opened to him. More opportunities made available. He took those opportunities seriously and buckled down even more in his already heavy schoolwork. By the time graduation had rolled around, he had earned both a Master's degree in Military Intelligence History and a Bachelor's in Combat Theory and Strategy. He ended up graduating second in his class, though the margin between himself and the valedictorian was only a few points. Though his family was unable to attend, they were allowed to watch the proceedings via a live stream to all families of the cadets who were not on Earth. Standing tall and proud in his uniform, as his ensign rank was pinned on, William heard the cheers of his family over the stadium's speakers. Following the ceremony, he spoke with his family via subspace, then wished them all well as he had to go and attend the after graduation parties with his friends, before shaping out to his first assignment. That first assignment was aboard the USS Valiant, NCC 1223. She was a heavy frigate class starship. He joined her crew as an Infiltration Specialist and spent the next three years honing his craft, using all the lessons he had learned up to that point. Following several successful, and classified, missions, now Lieutenant jg Henderson was given his choice of assignments. After careful deliberation, he chose one ship and posting in particular, the USS Defiant as her new Chief Intelligence Officer. He sent off his transfer request, then waited. What happens next, is up to the Fates… |
